Nick Fury is a Car Ninja

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 5, 2014, 7:58 PM

Went to see Captain America, Winter Soldier (which was highly enjoyable), that being said the rest of this journal and its replies will have spoilers. So. SPOILERS.

Every time we go to a movie we generally see through most of the twists and reveals almost immediately. They seem obvious enough, but then there are always the people in the audience who are all "WHAAAAAT??" When th reveal happens, so it made me want to conduct a poll.

For people who saw the movie:
Did you think Fury actually died/did his return shock you?
We're you surprised by who the big bad was/did you not just go "he's the bad guy" when he showed up?
Did you not realize the WE was Bucky? This one is tricky. They SHOW HIM in the commercials, but some people seemed legitimately shocked during the movie.

I need outside insight into this!

Sadly I was that idiot shocked by the last 2 and kinda suspected #1 since Nick Fury is INFAMOUS for throwing people curve-balls.

Finally saw the movie and can read this journal.

None of that surprised me. Nick Fury seemingly dying? Hah, the guy tells five lies before breakfast? Pierce is the villain? "Building a better world means tearing the old one down" never comes out of a good guy's mouth. Winter Soldier is Bucky? Decade old twist. Did the plot surprise me? At times, yes. But these twists? Nope, saw them coming from miles away.

I also did not see nazi computer man coming. But to be fair, wtf there is no way you could make that jump without prior knowledge.

But yea, everything else, saw it coming.

My friend gasped when he dropped his shield into the water but it mostly because "NO, THAT SHIELD IS IMPORTANT AND EXPENSIVE"

I saw it this past Friday (and then spent two days trying to remember who on my dA watch list had written a journal about it because I wanted to read what it said now that I'd seen the movie) and it shocked me every time they made a big revelation and people around me gasped out loud. The movie was enjoyable, sure, but to me it was most definitely predictable. I saw every one of the big revelations coming a mile away. Except for, maybe, the guy who got turned into a computer and whose name just escaped my mind as I typed this comment. That I didn't see coming. But didn't GASP because of it either.

Hahaha, I'm glad you found me again.

I don't think anyone without prior knowledge could have gone "Obviously it's a nazi who's been downloaded into a computer and is running everything."

GASP, SOMETHING OBVIOUS HAPPENED. Yea, I dunno how people get through life being this completely unable to read into anything. (I say this knowing someone personally who is on that level of "GASP, THAT OBVIOUS THING THAT WAS OBVIOUS HAPPENED")

You've got a point there. But now every time I watch a movie I'm going to think that, I just know it.

I guess those people just have uhm... A lot of exciting (?) revelations in their lives constantly?

I'm not even surprised by those people anymore. The ones that do bother me are the ones who were shocked when it was the accident's 100th birthday because they didn't know it had happened, they thought it was just a movie. But that's a different kind of problem.

When watching movies I try not to predict things too much, because it sort of dulls the enjoyment - so at Fury's death scene I was almost pleasantly surprised they finally killed somebody major off (of course, were I to process the information fully, I'd arrive at the thought, "nobody ever dies in comic books" fairly quickly). His re-appearance triggered a mental eye-roll, though. "Of course! He'd not die."

He was too coiffeured and tan to be good... but it being a superhero movie, I didn't really care, because he wouldn't triumph anyway?

That one was spoiled (awkward choice of word, really... I don't see it as anything bad) ages ago by my friend who only wanted to see the movie because Bucky was in it.

Eventually I would like to know what that twins clip at the end was about... but I really can't see myself stressing over it. I'm just happy this movie was good, and not another Thor.

I can't not predict, it's not even really thinking ahead. It's just *Nick Fury pronounced dead* my brain: He's not dead. He'll be back later. And so on. It's not active thought, just happens. Like breathing.

I don't even think the Bucky thing was really spoiled? Like I don't think it was meant to be a real secret (it would have been a good reveal, but I think the fans all knew he was WS so there was no point) but the people in the theatre being shocked was what was confusing.

The twins were Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, they'll be in Avengers 2, which will be confusing because they're also gonna be in Xmen DoFP, but as totally different people/different actors. I'm wondering how they're going to portray them. SW has confusing powers.

I do wish I could do that, sometimes. But I guess my brain just doesn't multitask - it's either in 'think' mode or 'watch movie' mode.

And yes... I'm thoroughly confused by that audience's reaction, too. Maybe it was SW's powers...confusing the audience through the screen...? No? Ok.

Maybe I watch too many movies/shows, because it's always in "decode plot" mode. Sometimes we figure out better endings for the show/movie than are written and are let down.

No, i think the audience might just be confused as a base point.

Also I feel a bit spoilt - I saw the movie at the third largest IMAX in the world, in 3D.

Genuine curiosity - what parts are legit?

And I rarely see movies anymore. The 3D was unobtrusive, by the way - not like Beowulf.

They betrayed me once with Colson's death, so going forward I'm taking every death with a grain of salt. Fury's did not shock me one bit. No more feels for major character deaths. "Trust no one," indeed.

Old white guy? Definitely the baddy. =P The only real shocker was Sitwell.

The Winter Soldier's identity is no surprise if one is familiar with the source material. They also point out that it's Bucky in the behind-the-scenes documentary they showed in place of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. about a month ago, so I don't believe they intended it to be a *big* secret.

I always assumed Coulson was still alive, so I'm doubly dubious. When they showed Fury coding we were just like WHATEVER, HE'S FINE.

Old white guy is TOTALLY the baddy, especially if he's all HEY FRIEND, HOW CAN I HELP? I AM CONCERNED IN THIS MATTER. I wasn't expecting sitwell, but also not shocked, just because he seems like an asshole.

They had Bucky's face showing in the trailer and poster, so I can't think it was really any sort of secret. Also the "BUCKY BARNES, THE ONLY MAN FROM THE GROUP TO GO MISSING, AND WHO WILL NEVER BE HEARD FROM AGAIN. EVER. EVER."

I knew Bucky was the Winter Soldier because my husband is a comic guru and told me years ago (before the first Captain America movie came out).

I wasn't really surprised Nick Fury wasn't dead, as soon as they said "she'll want to see him first" I figured that's what was going on. That and his "death" seemed too easy.

I didn't really expect Pierce to be the bad guy, but I wasn't all that surprised once they started talking about Insight's real purpose. And since he was in charge of Insight...it just kinda stood to reason that he was a baddie.

Overall it was awesome. I think Marvel keeps outdoing itself with every movie; they just seem to be getting better and better.

Not putting Bucky's face on the posters probably would have helped, too. Maybe they assumed people would know due to the comics so there was no point in hiding it, but people in the theatre not getting is is still beyond me.

We just assumed they were faking his death when he coded in the OR. Because it's Nick Fury and you can't kill him off. Annd the whole faking death to avoid assassinations thing is a trope now, and also Samuel L has more movies in his contract.

I think Marvel's got some really really strong ones, and then the rest are mostly good, then some duds. Avengers is amazing, and this is probably the best one since Avengers. I liked Thor 2, but it's not as good as Avengers was, and Iron Man 3 was sort of a flop with everyone.

I was so excited by Bucky's return. Especially with him rocking Jared Leto's look XD;

I was not really surprised by Fury's death (especially since they spoil it in a trailer anyway....) But I was pretty sure he'd show up again or that is was fake. I did like how it played out.

The big bad, I didn't expect at first... until the whole "Cap is lying to us about Fury" part.

I liked this movie. I especially like how they added The Falcon.... I was worried at first when I found out he was in this. I was like, seriously if he can talk to birds I'm gonna flip a bitch. Scarlet Witch btw? Looking badass. ♥

OMG he was such a brooding hobo. The people behind us were all "OMG, OMG, IT'S HIS FRIEND, THAT'S HIS FRIEND" when his mask came off. Maybe they don't watch trailers or the internet but COME ON. The movie had that part at the beginning where he's looking at the memorial to Bucky. They don't put stuff like that in a story without it coming up again. Chekhov's Gun, people.

Yea, I liked how it played out, the whole "making the person seem dead so people will stop trying to kill them" thing is just not new anymore, so people being shocked by it is confusing to me. HOW did no one report the massive fire fight he and the fake cops were having?

Pretty much as soon as Pierce showed up and was like OH, FURY, MY OLD FRIEND we all went =___= "Bad guy". Never trust the helpful ones. As soon as they showed the nurse we all called agent plant as well.

It was a really good movie, the action scenes were awesome, I loved the one in the elevator. AND Black Widow didn't bug me in this one since she was more in her element of humans fighting humans, not humans fighting alien gods where her abilities are kind of meaningless. We spent the entire movie going "Why doesn't Capt just call Tony Stark? He helped build those things he probably built a back door in, also he has a flying metal suit and doesn't trust SHIELD." But it probably would have wrapped the movie up too quickly.

I am sort of intrigued by the Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch tie in, but wary because they have them set up as after effects of the Loki Staff, instead of being born mutants. And since Xmen is already in existence and it's all Marvel one would think the universes should be able to tie into each other? Like one has Magneto and mutants then this one they're random twins made special by Asguardian tech. Maybe they'll explain it better in Avengers 2. I want to see how they do SW's powers, too. Her powers are so hard to define that it seems like they might just be making her a telekinetic. I hope JW does something interesting with them. WE SHALL SEE.

Well... the whole problem is the disasters that have been going on with Fox owning the rights for X-Men and Wolverine all that. It's so weird to me because QuickSilver and Scarlet are also in Days of the Future Past =x
So it's like... 2 entirely different set ups for the same characters in a span of 3 years. At least there's so many alternate timelines that you can kinda just shrug it off... like with the new Spiderman movies. Though I'm still slightly bitter of the lack of Jubilee in the x-men movies and the appearance of Blink in DotFP. I actually had an argument with 2 friends where they thought she was Psylocke on the poster.
I'm all "It's fucking Blink."
"Who's that?"
"Annoying..."
"But that's Psylocke... look at the energy daggers."
"It's Blink. Lookit her stupid forehead and the pink bangs."

I really like how JW is taking the Marvel/Disney franchise though. I've been so happy with the last few movies. ;u;
And even with so many little cliches and shit peppered in, they've done them so well. I'm super interested in how they pull off the whole Scarlet Witch character since she can at her best make 99% of the worlds mutants human XD

Yeaa, that's going to be... confusing. At least if they'd just kept them in one or the other it wouldn't have been so ridiculous, but both.  No one even knows who Blink is, why do they have her in it? Jubilee was in one of the previous ones, wasn't she? I think she's in 2 or 3... I'd have to look it up.

Yeaa, it's good because he's got someone there to be like YOU CANNOT KILL THE IMPORTANT CHARACTERS PEOPLE LIKE. And when he does it's a fake out. The movies have been enjoyable (i find that dudes don't dig Thor, though. To be fair, Thor is lady porn with magic and fighting.) I'm concerned about how they're gonna do SW's powers. JW is a big enough fan that I'm hoping he'll stick to what they kind of are, but the little preview was vague. No throwing up the devil horns and shooting colorful magic blasts like in Evolution, tho.

Regarding the Magneto twins, 20th Century Fox, who produced the X-Men movies, has the right to the X-Men franchise and the term "mutants" (while Sony owns rights to the Spider-Man films and everything else belongs to Disney/Marvel). Pietro and Wanda are more of Avengers than X-Men, so it makes sense for them to make an appearance in the upcoming Avengers movie. The catch is they couldn't be referred to as mutants, or make reference that Magneto is their father, etc. because of the rights Fox had (also the reason why Logan didn't appear in the first Cap movie. In the comics, Logan and Steve fought side by side during WWII). Yeah, it be nice if they could have one big tie-in in films, but that could only happen if one company decides to forfeit the rights to another company, and that's clearly not gonna happen as long as they can make money off of it.

I understand the litigious aspect of it, but it's still pretty ridiculous. I'm sure they'll do something cool with them but I don't know if I'm okay with them completely altering what a character fundamentally is to fit them into a movie. I realize that they've already altered Thor a lot, but idk, at least he's still from Asgard and not like,  the terminator sent back from the future.

They could proooobably get away with telling a bit of their background without mentioning Magneto's name, etc. I was actually under the impression that they found the twins and they already have their powers, but I wasn't paying too much attention to Baron cuz of the excitement in seeing the twins. XD I'll have to listen to that part when I see the movie again.

Nah, they were talking about "what about the volunteers" and he said to get rid of the dead, then they basically said "well what about the ones who survived?". If they tried I think they could probably suggest they're mutants w/o saying mutants or mentioning Magneto. They're so young they might not know who the dad is yet.

Magneto's got a lot of kids wandering about.

Aaah, okay. But yeah, they can still probably get away with mentioning their backstory without referencing anything X-Men. We won't know until Avengers 2, but if they have to tweak their backstory, I don't think I would mind all that much. The MCU is it's own universe anyway, so we'd expect some changes in certain aspects of the story that we'd originally know from the comics. And I thought Disney/Marvel overall did their movies really well, so I'm sure they'll come up with a cool, alternate backstory (if they need to) for the twins like you said.

I just don't want them to muck it up too much. They've done a REALLY good job thus far with the avenger-related movies. I'm worried they'll start altering stuff and go off the rails and it'll end up ruining characters and being dumb like the Xmen movies.
