Lala, more SAI practice junk. i was TRYING to work on digital inking, but it's very difficult for me for whatever reason, and i tend to almost immediately give up on things like that when they are difficult (this is a large part of why i am not a gamer). So i was trying to ink a doodly thing of Perg, but then this > [link] happened and i got angry and in an act of rebellion i decided to redo the entire thing linelessly, just to show those stupid lines who they were dealing with. Hopefully they've learned their lesson.

i have to say: i completely hate her face on almost every level one could hate a drawing of a face. It is vacant and awful and not right and i like the crappy lineart face 100xs more. But, the point of practicing wasn't to work on faces so i'm leaving it, and i actually like the rest of it. i was pleasantly surprised that her right hand actually came out looking like a hand, and not a peachy-pink blob. So, hurray!

i am going to claim that this is Perg pretending to be a normal human (humans wear a lot of pink, right? Riiight.) which is why she's in a random dress and has no tail or pointy ears. Yes. So, how many of you have noticed that i like drawing pointless junk of Perg with her hair all swooshed?

paint tool SAI, char/art are mine, please no using/taking, thanks. Faving w/o commenting is boo, etcetcetc.

I'm intensely impressed by the depth you put into the image just by using shading. Like, no lines needed, just shading. And I love how you make it look like you painted it.

I'm really liking how this came out. I love how bold and bright the colors are, and how they some not-quite-definable quality and energy that makes her really stand out.

I love how her hands are drawn. You paid attention to detail in the shapes and in the shadows on them, but they have slightly cartoony energy that makes them seem particularly lifelike. I like the shading on her right hand a lot, though I think it feels a little bit disjointed because it jumps from the darker shadows on her hand to a dearth of shadows on her forearm. But I like that the shading on her fingers really define the shapes of her fingers.

I think part of that mysterious lifelike energy her figure has to it is that the shapes have a slightly exaggerated roundness all around, that is emphasized by the shadows, and the highlights add a simultaneously soft and bold look to everything. This is another example of how your figures always have such a great sense of movement and energy.

The face....I wouldn't say it looks vacant, but I will agree that it dosn't have as much energy and kick as it did in the sketch. There's something about the shape and size of the eyes that isn't quite as striking. I do like her smile in this finished version a lot, though somehow it's missing a bit of the spontaneous feel of the mouth in the sketch.

But, overall, I think this is a lovely pic. I love the bright, graphic look and the lively energy that is created through the pose and the coloring. :+fav:

I love the flow of her hair and I actually like her face (it doesn't look vacant so much as simply gentle to me) but I find the contrast of her dress and skin against the background to be quite lacking when put together with her dark red hair and more prominent facial features.

I'm not sure if you're interested in light critique for this piece but if you're not then just ignore all that stuff up there ._.

Her hair is brown :O, And the pic was mostly for practicing with brushes in SAI, so not a lot of thought went into the composition and lighting. i'm actually pretty sure that the shading itself doesn't even make sense.

=o Huh! Well Perg's hair has always struck me as somewhere in between red and brown anyway.

How are you finding SAI so far? It's me go-to for artwork, I simply cannot get the hang of working on a Photoshop canvas (even though I should).

It's brown, but i tend to tint it a little red (or just make it red) because i like doing red-themed pictures of her. i can't leave it just blank anymore because apparently people thought she was blonde, which was blowing my mind.

i'm liking it a lot! It's definitely better for "painting" or what have you, though i don't understand the tools as well as photoshop. Not comfortable inking w/ it, and don't really know how to make sort of glowy effects as well as in PS, and no vector stuff, so i'll keep using PS for that, but it's a good tool. What problems do you find w/ the PS canvas?

buh buh buh a blonde Perg I see what you mean o_o

I think with a bit more time you'll find that SAI actually has a lot of brush options to toy with and I think you'll probably find some awesome settings to vector with. Personally when I vector I prefer to go for the Pen tool (although the names may vary between copies, as may the tools) because it's a lot more opaque than the Brush and doesn't blend. Easy Paint Tool SAI does deserve its name though. It's extremely user-friendly and navigating around it should only take you a couple days to get used to. 8)

Well for PS I find the graininess of the pixels (when zooming in and out) to be a huge turnoff as I'm more used to working with smooth lines. The little open windows (like for the Layers and Tools) tend to obscure my working area and make it hard for me to reach a part of the canvas when I need to. I'm fairly certain there are settings available for me to toy with to fix these irks, but I haven't found them yet. Any advice?

Yea, it crashed my brain and i had to nip it in the bud.

Whenever i vector it's with the pen tool in PS (with a mouse, because for some reason it's harder for me to use the pen tools with a tablet). Technically, vectoring can only be done with programs that use actual vector points, can you do that in SAI?

i think i'd have to see your PS set up, and know what version you use. All the little open things CAN be a pain, it helps if you have a bigger/wider screen, because you can just toss them all off to the side. In newer versions you can group the ones you actually use together and then collapse them. i tend to just push them all to the far sides of the screen so they're not in the way, but they can still be annoying. i'll have to look for the pixel graininess, that sort of thing usually just has to do with dpi, but i haven't really bothered to look between sai and ps. Ahh, so much to learn.

i have a problem in SAI where the brushes and junk toolbar runs off the bottom of my screen and i can't get it to scroll down to stuff. :\

Don't hurt me for I will actually say a negative comment. Please don't hurt me! Anyways...is it just me or does the bow on her back kind of look like a mug handle. (Did I mention, "Please don't hurt me.") Besides the "Mug Handle" and it lacks the usual quality that sashamya brings to facial expression, it looks really good. I like the subtle translucence of the dress.

Even with digital inking, the pen tool in PS doesn't really require a tablet...just swoop and tap the trackpad. Whooooo waste of moneys.

Yeah...coloring is infinitely easier with a tablet. For some reason it just seems to take FOREVER compared to just grabbing RL markers or some other coloring tool.

Listen, pointless drawings with swooshy hair make the world go round. >:| I really like the colors you picked--it looks very happy and spring day-y, which makes it even better that it's Perg.

I actually like using the brush tool to ink because I'm rubbish with the pen tool. I can show you my settings if you ever want them. :B

i really wanted to be a jackass and put black fire or something coming out of that hand so there'd be a point to her having it up there all looking like she's hailing a taxi but i decided against it (read: was too lazy to keep poking at it).

Yess, share your wisdom with me on this matter, for the ink pen and i, we do not see eye to eye, and i have thrown all of its possessions out on the lawn and told it not to come back.

Well, the ink pen pretty much had it coming, insisting on having its own stupid layer and everything.

[link] These are my settings--I think they're for the most recent version, but all the versions are pretty similar. I have the correction set to eight, which minimizes my shaky shaky hand pretty well.

Yea, what's THAT about? It's too good to have a normal layer like the other brushes? Bianary doesn't need a special layer, and neither do you, ink pen.

Hmmm, i will have to try this, thanks ♥. For some reason my problem seems to stem from hand and eyes not working together. i dunno why when i ink by hand it's peachy then i do it digitally and my hand is all 'Fuck this noise i'm going over here to draw some blobs'.
